The incident occurred in Orange County at Middletown High School on Monday, Sept. 30, in Middletown.

According to a message from Middletown School District Superintendent Amy Creeden, there was an incident between two students that resulted in one of them being cut in the face with what allegedly was a knife that is in police custody.

Creeden said that the instrument used had a one-half to three-quarter-inch blade.

The alleged offender was immediately arrested, taken into police custody, transported out of the school premises, and then charged with assault in the first degree, said Lt. Jeffry Thoelen of the Middletown Police.

The victim received medical attention within 38 seconds of the incident and was transported to the hospital for further treatment for a non-life-threatening facial injury, Creeden said.

"Middletown High School administration, along with our two School Resource officers from the City of Middletown Police Department, arrived on the scene within 10 seconds and helped calm the situation and support the emergency team," the superintendent said.

She added that within minutes of the incident, additional City of Middletown police officers responded to the school.

Due to the incident, the City of Middletown Police Department had a more significant presence in and around Middletown High School on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

Thoelen said the student was charged and released on his own recognizance for a future court appearance.

The student was not identified due to his age.
